which camera is better for no-flash baby photography and children's photos? canon xt1i or the nikond5000?
my sister is having a baby and wants a camera that she can shoot with no flash for the baby (so it doesn’t hurt her eyes, and if you use a flash, baby’s learn that it hurts their eyes and after a while they will squint as soon as you put the camera to your eye). she wants it to be something good for when the baby is older too (ie: soccer, birthday parties, etc.)
i’m a photographer and i like nikons but when i compared the nikon d5000 and the canon xt1i today, i ran into a dilemma as they seem to balance each other out in pros and cons. here’s what i found comparing the same no flash photo on both cameras:
canon xt1i:
photo too soft in color, sort of a blue tone. could be corrected with custom settings in P mode, but my sister doesnt want to have to mess with settings.
smooth looking photo, not as sharp as i’d like it to be
nikon d5000:
colors too yellow in tone
sharper image than the canon
noisier than the canon
cleans the sensor when it turns on, so it has a slow startup time. not sure if that can be turned off.
* my sister wants to be able to use it on auto and scene modes.
i know that most people will say just get her a point and shoot, but she wants the option of adjusting stuff if she wants to, and i do believe that even the photos in auto mode on the dslr deliver a more quality looking picture than a point and shoot. something about that mirror in their makes a big difference in how it looks, although i can’t quite put my finger on that factor that makes it look like "quality."

The question you ask has more to do with the lens than with the camera. I am a Nikon guy, so I don’t know what Canon offers. But I’d get the D5000, and the AF-S Nikkor 35mm f1.8 lens, if possible. This lens lets in a boatload of light, so it takes fantastic pictures everywhere! It is super sharp, even wide open, and it’s priced very well. It costs about $200.
I recently traded in the 18-55mm kit lens from my D60, and bought this lens to replace it, and I absolutely don’t regret it!
Personally I would go with Nikon D5000.Sharp & clear pictures.Fast continuous shooting.
