I can’t answer for all schools, but the college I’m enrolled in gives you both basic courses in techniques suitable for most types of photography and has courses for specific types, such as advertising photography, photojournalism and fine art photography. This gives you a solid set of skills to apply in any situation and field as well as a sampling of more specific fields of photography. While it may be that certain schools are known for courses that support certain fields better than others, I believe that the most important thing is to get a good, detailed knowledge of the basics so they can be applied as needed to work in your chosen field. Just my opinion, I hope it helps you out.

Each photography school will have its own strengths and weaknesses. But all of these schools should teach the basics of photography and give you a good amount of everything. Some will be more "Art" driven while others will be more commercial oriented. This is the largest distinction you want to look for as if you are into commercial photography and going to an "art" school that focuses on experimental photography, your professors may look down on your work.
