What are the benefits of a job as a photographer?
As my senior final exam in my career investigation class, I need to write a twelve page children’s book on "How To Become a Photographer"
I would like to know the primary benefits of being a photographer?
What are the major steps to take in the process of BECOMING a photographer.
What kind of people are good at photography as far as creativity, people skills, schedule, or any other elements of personal and physical character.

Benefits will vary depending on what sort of photography and where (or by who) the individual is employed.
Primary benefits for me are travel (often with all expenses paid if commissioned) and being paid good money for something I enjoy.
Getting good looking women to get naked is a bonus sometimes as well
Major steps of becoming a photographer – getting a camera and learning how to use it properly.
All sorts of people can be good at photography. Creativity comes into it with most but there are some photographers who do not have a creative bone in their body.
People skills – again, yes and no. Depends on what you are doing, whether you work for a company or for yourself etc.
There really is no such thing as a typical photographer.
Some are people persons, some don’t have any personnel skills but are massively creative.
Some are great at landscapes but could not take a portrait if they tried, some are fantastic at taking sports shots but crap at landscapes etc etc
It is such a diverse subject that it is impossible to really answer your questions one way or the other.
Are there any benefits in being a photographer?
Well you get to do what you like, but it’s a job that is quite glorified, it’s a whole lot work that doesn’t include a camera…
You can become a photographer by getting a camera and tell someone that you now are a photographer, there are no tests to pass or anything. But most photographers nowadays goes to some art school and university.
There are a whole lot of different kinds of photographers too, There are the journalists, the wedding photographers, art photographers, the guys that hang around in studios and the nature phtographers that hangs around in swamps…
Very interesting topic and I hope you get more then my answer.
Benefit of being a photographer for me have been:
seeing people doing fun things, think weddings, getting promotions at work and doing sports. Not so fun things when I was doing news work included traffic crashes, fires and such. I also have had the fun of travel to make photos and being paid to do so. Money to pay the bills too.
Step one is desire, Step two for a lot of us was college where we learned the "how to" of darkroom , shooting and lighting to make images. The better photographers I know also made good use of college to learn marketing.
Most of us started out working for other photographers or large studios to learn how they work day to day. I worked at three of them. I also worked in High School and college for news papers.
I think the better photographers I have known over the years were very detail driven. The ones that made good money are all very good at talking with ppl and getting them to pay the bills. A lot of them also play music.
well, the benefits are endless, sure most photographers won’t make it rich, actually, only a few will make it big. but what i have taken from it in the past year i’ve been shooting pro. is that my photography takes me everywhere, i get to meet people that i never would have met. from the mundane to the way out there. i also have found the most beautiful of locations that i never would have found otherwise, most right in my city. as far as major steps, some would say you have to go to school to do it, i didn’t, i just bought a camera and started shooting what i liked, friends and family. then they all told their friends and next thing i know, i’m signing up with a print lab to handle all of my work. as far as my character is concerned, i’ve always been a man of my word and if i say i’ll be there at a certain time or i promise to get a shot that the bride wants, regardless if i don’t care for such an angle or pose, i’ll get it. i also have a very sctrict privacy policy on some of my shoots (for when i shoot boudoir style) anybody can take a photograph, only a few can take one everybody wants to see.
