Is photography school a good idea for career?
We found this photography school in DC that has a one year program for a certificate. It is about 00. My wife has a little bit of a background in photography and never finished college and is having a baby soon.
Would the certificate be helpful in her having a career doing portraits, weddings etc. or should she just take some classes and not do the program. We are thinking a four year degree isn’t really an option at this point which is why the one year of night classes sounded appealing.
Please help! We want to know of anybody who went to a photography school and got a certificate or any photographers advice.
Thank you!

If you are a mediocre photographer, no degree, certificate, diploma, etc., in the world will do you any good. If you’re a good photographer, school will help, but won’t make your career.
Have her put together a portfolio of her work and have her show it to any local studios that might be looking for photographer’s assistants.
Having a certificate, etc. may help get her in the door, but a portfolio of outstanding work will get her further. If she is a good photographer, and she wants to hone her skills before getting into the business, then go through the program. If she can put together an outstanding portfolio new, then do that and look at getting any formal training once she is a working professional.
Compared to the cost of camera equipment, $7000 seems like a good deal.
I don’t know of any certificate for proof you are a professional. That usually comes from education and years of being an assistant with a pro photographer.
You don’t want to know how much some of us pros have paid to attend a professional photo school like Brooks or Art Center.
Some community colleges provide a lot of good photo/art classes that will be a good start in building your wife’s portfolio and getting an opportunity to work as an assistant with a professional in the area of photography she likes and is good at shooting.
The $7000 is just the start, lights, cameras, lenses, will be another $7000 or so.
While schooling is the right idea, as a career path? Of the 20 that I studied with Im the only one still in the industry. Not because I was any better as a photographer when I left school, I wasnt. After school I spent a few years selling cameras. Then I did TV Production School. Took about 5 years after photography school before I started earning real money.
To get a wage or salary assisting a photographer is the best way.
Not trying to talk you out off it, just what my experience has been.

usually it’s a hard business to get into, i would say it’s better as a hobby then a job, sure you can see and capture beautiful landscapes but it’s a hard business to proceed in.
