How is a photographer paid for shooting a JROTC Ball?
I’ve been asked to shoot a local JROTC Ball. I’ve done weddings, gymnastic shoots, and several other things, but never a JROTC Ball. Does the school pay the photographer a session fee, then the photographer gets whatever is made from the formals s/he shoots, or how does this work?
Finally, is there a sequence of events laid out anywhere that I could review in case they want more than simply the formals?
Thanks!

You can contract for the "Event" either a a whole or in part. You can take the individual/couples for a flat fee depending on the size you offer . The Event can be taken table by table and presented to organizers on how they want your product printed. It what you want to offer. You can stipulate a set price for the Event that covers your costs.
Most military balls have the reception line of dignitaries then the opening ceremonies. The prayer before the meal and maybe a few announcements. Someplace in the middle or near the end they will usually have a presentation before the dancing actually starts. I hope that helps.
The way that it has been working for my battalion is that the instructors make a down payment then at the ball its self the cadets will pay a fee for the picture.
Joe, photographers (not in house) are independent contractors. They may make any arrangement they see fit with the sponsoring agency. I used to shoot proms. MY contract was simply a verbal agreement with the prom sponsor /and or school principal. It was simple, I shot several rolls of film on the student’s demand. My sales and profit if any was based on the student’s orders after I posted the ‘proofs’ in a public place within the school as previously agreed with the sponsoring agency. I quickly learned that the proofs were considered fair game by some students and arranged to have them under glass!
I wouldnt ask us. ..I would ask the person in charge of the ball. They would have the best answer.. but since you DID post this question.. I suppose I can give you a "close to best" answer. I took photos for this Policeman Ball that is held each year in our county. ..and since it was my first photo oppurtunity with an "event" ..I did not ask for money and refused what they offered me. Because, I didnt know how good I would be. Several of the guests enjoyed their photos and asked to pay me for them.. and so I charged $8 a print. ..I made almost $100 that night through tips and prints. But, all places are different. You are who they are hiring. ..You need to give them a price. Did you ever call up someone like.. the cable man or carpet guy. ..and tell them what you are going to pay them? ..no. haha. They give you a price. So.. I guess see what they say.. and go from there. good luck <3
