How freelance photographer for magazine get paid ?

I am going to have an interview for freelance photographer. I am just an amateur photographer and have no idea how things work as far as compensation.
Do they get paid per picture or per occasion ? How much is the average rate for freelance photographer for local magazine ?

There is basically a protocol for editorial photographers relationship with magazines.
They are paid in two ways. First they get a day rate plus expenses. This can be from $350 a day up to thousands. Second, if the publication uses any of the images, then they are paid based upon the size and location of the images used (Front page is usually about 10x the fee for inside usage) and those fees are paid upon publication … The expenses are paid up front, the day rate is paid upon presentation of the agreed upon images to the publisher and finally the last payment is paid within 30 days of the date it is published.
Local magazines may not pay at all, but do a "pay in kind" agreement with you and exchange our work for advertising space in the magazine.
Again, you will have to negotiate with the assignment editor before you accept the assignment.
I would have an initial meeting with them. Find out what all they want, say if they want wedding pictures, then think of your time, your film, your gas, prints and how many. Plus what is your hrly rate. Calculate all that in and don’t underbid yourself. After you figure out how to chrge pr. job pr. image, I’d always make sure you have them sign a contract. Agreement on price, how many revisions you are willing to do, how many prints or doubles you will do. What would happen if they cancel, which would be called a kill fee, with this they would pay you a percentage of the job. Look it up on-line "kill fee, termination fee" read up on that and make yourself a contract make sure they sign it. It protects yourself. NEVER trust ones word. People will try to get something for nothing. I’m a graphic designer,trust me, I have dealt with lots. So always contract, and copyright also in the contract. If you are selling all rights to your images, make sure you charge more. If they are going to use it for multiple things say a magazine, post cards, business card , charge more.
